UNI shocks Iowa State at Big Four Classic

Sports

For the second time this season, Northern Iowa took down a national powerhouse.

The Panthers upset No. 5 Iowa State on Saturday, capping a great day of action at the Big Four Classic.

With Saturday’s win, Northern Iowa became the first MVC team in 50 years to win two games against top-five teams in the same season. The Panthers knocked off No. 1 North Carolina in November.

Wes Washpun and Paul Jesperson combined for 49 points against the Cyclones, a statement performance in the state capitol.

“Just a great game to be a part of,” said UNI head coach Ben Jacobson. “Really proud of our guys and our team. We had to find a way to hold off one of the top three or four teams in the country. These guys and their teammates were able to do that.”

“We just want to prove that we can play with anybody,” said UNI senior guard Wes Washpun. “I know coach believes in the guys in the locker room. Whatever game we are in, we are never out of it, it doesn’t matter the opponent.”

UNI takes on Hawaii in the Diamond Head Classic on Wednesday.
