South Dakota earned the Summit Leagues first at-large bid after finding out Monday afternoon the Yotes are squaring off with Clemson in the NCAA tournament.
This is USD’s second tourney appereance with the first being in 2014. It wasn’t the best circumstances for the team to figure out with ESPN leaking the bracket hours before it was scheduled. Even with the less than ideal conditions about the bracket being reveled, the Yotes were still excited to be in the big dance.
“I think all of us were just in awe that it was happening this way, I don’t think it’s ever happened this way before, but it’s just as exciting,” Redshirt sophomore Hannah Sjerven said.
Head coach Dawn Plitzuweit also added how important this moment is for the school.
“It’s been a season of first for us in a lot of ways and to have this opportunity is something that’s very, very special to our young ladies, to our program to our univeristy and that’s because this is what young ladies come to college to be a part of, the big dance,” Plitzuweit said.
Junior guard Ciara Duffy knows this expereince is a lifelong memory for her and her teammates.
“It’s truly indescribable, it’s really just honestly starting to sink in,” Duffy said. “This day had a lot of anticiatpion, a lot of excitment and now all of a sudden it’s becoming real, like we made the NCAA Tournament.”
Friday’s matchup against Clemson starts at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.
