SIOUX CITY, Iowa (ABC9 Sports)–For the first time in school history, the Heelan girls left the state soccer tournament with a championship trophy.
The 2nd-ranked Crusaders toppled Nevada 2-0 in Des Moines, a win those girls will never forget.
Heelan returned to Siouxland on Sunday, greeted by friends and family at a championship homecoming. Heelan’s run to a championship was wildly impressive. In five playoff games since their regional opener, the Crusaders outscored their opponents 29-0. The Heelan defense stonewalled every team in the 1A bracket and the girls are overjoyed to bring a title back home.
“The road to a championship was very fun,” said Jessica Brown. “We played really hard in the regionals, we beat Western Christian to go to state. We had a good thing going and I thought we had a lot of good chances and it continued over to the championship game.”
“It’s a great experience being with these girls,” said assistant coach Lawrence Jensen. “They are extremely respectful. They are buying into our system and it has been a great relationship with them.”
