2-A-Days: Wayne

Local Sports
WAYNE, Neb. (ABC9 Sports)–For the first time since 2005, the Wayne Blue Devils avoided a losing season last year. A 5-5 campaign in 2013 has Coach Terry Beair’s crew hoping for bigger and better things in 2014.

The Blue Devils will have a tough road though. They return just three starters from a year ago and will have to replace Jalen Barry under center. The new quarterback though will have a talented target to throw to in Brook Bowers.

Wayne knows they will be underdogs in many games throughout the season, but they have accepted and embraced that role.

“For some people, expectations are kind of low,” said Bowers, “but for us, we have high expectations for ourselves and so do our coaches.”

“Our motto for this year is ‘All out, all game, all season,'” said Senior Jackson Belt. “He [Coach Beair] says just to keep going forward and put everything in the past and keep going.”

“We are a young team. We graduated some really talented kids. We still have some kids that have a lot of talent here,” added Beair. “Our goal is to take each as it is, play hard, play all out, all the time.

“If we aren’t in the playoffs, i’m going to be a little disappointed,” continued Beair. “And i think the team will too, because we anticipate being in the playoffs and actually going deep in the playoffs.”

The Blue Devils have their first game on Friday night at O’Neill.
