2-A-Days: SB-L

SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (ABC9 Sports)–Last year, Sergeant Bluff-Luton was really just one play away from the playoffs. A last-minute Hail Mary by Le Mars in week three proved costly. Despite having a better record than the Bulldogs, the Warriors sat at home for the postseason.

But in Coach Justin Smith’s second season, SB-L is ready to put that behind them and make some noise this year.

It won’t be easy, in a district with perennial powers like Spencer, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, and Heelan, but since SB-L took their lumps last year, that could mean trouble for their opponents in 2014.

The Warriors return four of their top-five rushers from last year, highlighted by Matt George’s 726 yards and Connor Imming’s 10 touchdowns. Defensively, six starters are back including Taylor Christensen and Jacob Sandoz who were second and third on the team in tackles.

The pieces are there for SB-L, now the Warriors just have to continue to grow under Smith.

“We’re ahead of the curve, kids are a lot more confident in the system, a lot more confident with practice structure and things like that,” said Smith. “If they step onto the field this year expecting to win, when i think last year, they stepped in kinda, ‘I hope we win.'”

“We just need to focus more on finishing and intensity in practice,” said Imming. “Right now, we aren’t quite there yet for intensity and focus, but i think we are getting there and hopefully we will be there by week one.”

“We gotta finish the drill, finish the game, finish in conditioning,” added Sandoz. “That’s been the focus, is finish.”
