Connor McCaffery juggling 2 sports for Hawkeyes at tourney time

After injuries, surgery and a battle with mono last year, Connor McCaffery is healthy and back pursuing a two-sport career at Iowa.

“I just gotta be smarter about how I eat, sleep, just take care of my business,” McCaffery said. “I just gotta be mature about everything.”

Ensuring he doesn’t get worn out while trying to play basketball and baseball is also a cooperative effort between Fran McCaffery and Rick Heller.

“Basically is what Connor does is he tries to come over and hit when he can on his own and then get in here and play catch and make sure that his arm is in good shape,” Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller said. “Then he gets out and goes to basketball. That’s really all we expect at this point.”

“He’s going to be in shape. He doesn’t have to go over there and run. He doesn’t have to lift. He lifts with us. He’s going to want to join that team whenever our season ends and be ready. If you don’t go over there you’re not going to be ready. He recognizes that.”

McCaffery’s provided depth and toughness to the Hawkeyes backcourt helping them return to the NCAA Tournament. But once the Hawks’ season on the hardwood ends, he expects the transition to the baseball diamond should be a smooth one.

“I’ll be in working, trying to make sure that adjustment is quick and happens fast for me, so I can try and pick up right where I left off. Jump in and take at-bats, and be comfortable and be good,” McCaffery said.

“The guys know him, they respect him, they know he comes in here and gets his work done and works hard when he can,” Heller said. “It’s tough when you’re gonna miss probably 20 or more games until you show up. But if anybody can do it, Connor can.”
