If you list the top track and field athletes to come through Siouxland, it doesn’t take too long before Sioux City East alum Shelby Houlihan is mentioned.
Tonight the former Arizona State All-American began her road to Rio at the USA Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
Houlihan qualified for the trials in the 5,000 and the 1,500. During the 5K, she stayed in the middle of the pack for most of the run before making an impressive move late to finish in 15:26.91, the third best time in the semifinals.
She did, however, scratch out of the 1,500, despite having the 11th best time in the world this year, to focus on the 5,000.
The finals are on Sunday to see if Houlihan earns a trip to Rio.
