MADISON, Miss (WJTV) – April is national donate life month. A Mississippi man just got a life-changing gift, a kidney from an unlikely donor.
Meet Chuck Dew, he is 50 years old and on his fourth kidney. This kidney is, even more, personal – it came from his wife.
“Thank you to my wife, I wouldn’t be here without her. I would be here, but not with a kidney. So it’s a great gift she gave me on Christmas day.”
It was on Christmas day when doctors at the University of Alabama hospital gave Chuck and Jennifer Dew the surprising news – that her kidney would now become his.
“For me, the benefit outweighed the risks. It was worth it. Death was my biggest fear. I think the long term effects of being on dialysis and not having an organ just taking over his life.
Chuck’s lived with kidney problems his whole life – he was born with a defect that causes renal failure. his first two kidney donations were rejected – the third gave him 24 healthy years before failing in 2017.
“The surgical experience was a little bit overwhelming, scary obviously, more I think for his sake, I wasn’t worried I’d lose an organ, more so that it wasn’t going to work for him and change his life.”
It’s been one month since their surgeries, and Chuck says he feels great.
“Don’t hesitate to get on their transplant list if you’re on dialysis because it’ll change your life. It’s nothing like having a kidney over dialysis for sure.”
With this successful surgery behind them, Chuck and Jennifer are looking forward to what’s in store for the next 24.
Chuck and Jennifer both say they’re still a bit sore, but are looking forward to some much-needed vacation time.
