(ABC9) A movement happening on capitol hill could cost you when it comes to eating sugary treats.

A proposal for a tax on sodas and other sweet treats is going around Washington.

After  the U.S. dietary guidelines advisory committee called on Americans to reduce sugar and meat consumption on a daily basis in order to live healthier lives.

However, several proposals are targeting added sugars from food processing suggesting a tax on foods and soda with higher acidic and sugar contents.

The panel said, “Higher sugar-sweetened beverage taxes may encourage consumers to reduce sugar-sweetened beverage consumption. Using the revenues from higher sugar-sweetened beverage taxes for nutrition health promotion efforts of to subsidize fruits and vegetables could have public health benefits.”

The idea of a tax on sugary foods has already sparked action in congress
The USDA has said they will act on the panel’s recommendations within 45 days.

Final guidelines are to be released by the end of the year.
