ABC9 Theatre: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

This Morning
The film buffs on the ABC9 morning crew are back!
For our second edition of ABC9 Theatre, the gang went to go see a much smaller film than last week’s superhero epic, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
This week, Lukas, Scott, and Drew saw the sequel to the 2002 surpise smash hit, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2!
Following the exploits of the large Portokalos family 15 years after the first film. This time, Toula and Ian are preparing to see their daughter go away to school. Meanwhile, it is revealed that the her parents, Maria and Gus, after fifty years together, are not legally married. So what can the large Greek family do about this? Have a big fat Greek wedding of course! But does the wedding go off without a hitch?!
The film sees the return of the principle cast of the original film, including Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), John Corbett (United States of Tara, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll), Lainie Kazan (You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, Gigli), Michael Contantine (Room 222), and John Stamos (Full House, Grandfathered).
The critics haven’t been too kind to the film. Rotten Tomatoes currently rates the film 25%. However, it does have a slightly more favorable score on IMDB, coming in at 6.4 out of 10.
So what did the guys think of the film? Their reviews are below:
Drew: I have a confession to make, I didn’t really care to see this film, and I never saw the original. But I found the film to be enjoyable enough, similar to a tv movie or a very long episode of a sitcom. While not a laugh riot, there are some decent chuckles throughout. This comes mostly from the overbearing, larger than life characters. Scott and I joked that if these were real people, the property value of the neighborhood would plummet, and we would want to be very far away from them! But that is a testament to the actors, who seem to be enjoying themselves, which comes across on screen. I think this film would work best as a Sunday matinee as a couple, or with your mom. Plus it has John Stamos, who is an American treasure! I think we can all agree that he’s a real dreamboat! In conclusion, Ελληνικό γάμο μου μεγάλο γεγονός ήταν αρκετά ευχάριστη, αλλά δεν θα πάω από το δρόμο μου για να το ξαναδώ. I give My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 a 5.5 out of 9.
Lukas: Yes, I have to admit I didn’t see the first one after being such a smash hit. But I still enjoyed the second installment of the Greek family comedy. I normally don’t go see movies like this in the theater anymore because generally I am disappointed, this one however was surprisingly entertaining. Even if you didn’t see the first one, you can still enjoy the total awkwardness and at the same time, loveliness of a Greek family living their life in between cultures. It’s funny an certainly a good movie to go to on a Saturday evening. What it lacks however is originality. It plays of the first one, the jokes are funny but not memorable, it simmer along and never quite picks up the pace. The acting is good and the actors do a great job of portraying their parts, what they can’t make up for is a compelling plot that is completely absent from this movie. Again, it’s a good family movie and will pass you 90 minutes in an entertaining way but if you were looking for a great movie on top of that, you have to go elsewhere. 5 out of 9.
Scott: ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ accomplishes all that it sets out to do – keeping a smile on your face with a lighthearted and cute romantic comedy. What’s refreshing about this movie compared to other comedy sequels is that typically filmmakers will roll out retreads of the same old jokes from the first movie, but ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ keeps the laughs fresh while also keeping crude humor to a minimum.

What’s enjoyable and relatable about the movie is that you can identify some of the zany characters as members of your own family! It explores some themes regarding love and life decisions that engage your brain a little as the film approaches a fun, goofy conclusion. Appropriate for nearly all audiences, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is worth taking the family on a trip to the theater.

Next week on ABC9 Theatre, the gang will go see the first person action thrill ride, Hardcore Henry! So be on the lookout for our review!
