SD Penitentiary employee arrested for trying to get gun to inmate

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KCAU) - An employee at the South Dakota State Penitentiary has been arrested after allegedly trying to get a prisoner a gun. 

Willard Allan Dathe, 68, of Sioux Falls, was arrested and charged with one count of attempted possession of unauthorized article with intent to deliver to prison, a class 6 felony. 

Dathe allegedly made arrangements to get an inmate a gun on Thursday, according to a release from Attorney General Marty Jackley.

Dathe was a counselor at the Penitentiary at the time.

If convicted, Dathe faces a possible year in prison and a $2,000 fine.

The Special Investigations Unit at the South Dakota State Penitentiary is investigating the case, and the Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting it.
