Sioux Falls man killed in South Dakota plane crash

MCCOOK COUNTY, S.D. - UPDATE:  Authorities have identified the man that died in a plane crash in McCook County South Dakota over the weekend.

Authorities identified Comet Haraldson, 69, of Sioux Falls as the pilot who died in the crash. 

Haraldson was the only person onboard the single engine aircraft when it crashed Sunday afternoon just south a Salem, South Dakota.

Radio traffic from Sioux Falls air traffic control indicates Haraldson was having a medical issue before he eventually crashed. 

Authorities said the NTSB will be investigating that crash.


PREVIOUS: Authorities in McCook County responded to a report of a small plane crash around 2:30 Sunday.

That crash happened at 263rd Street and 440th Avenue in south of Salem, South Dakota.

McCook County Emergency Manager Brad Stiefvater says the pilot in the crash has died. The pilot was the only person onboard the plane.

Authorities say they received a call around 2:15 from the pilot. The pilot was reporting that he was having a medical issue that was making the plane hard to fly.

Authorities advised him to land the plane, but he was unable to and eventually crashed.
