SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A million dollar home that has sat vacant and unfinished for nearly six years in the southern part of Sioux Falls is now at the center of a lawsuit.
It might be the largest and most expensive birdhouse in the world because that is about the only activity at this home on Westfield Trail in Lincoln County since 2016.
The city fined the owner, Vitaliy Strizheus, numerous times for health code violations and ordered him to demolish the house, calling it unsafe and unlivable in 2017.
The large home, that has sat vacant for a few years, was also the target of vandals last year when someone spray painted graffiti.
In August of last year, Strizheus said medical expenses and a nearly two million dollar tax bill delayed the construction of the home.
“Probably going to be one of the nicest homes in Sioux Falls, once it’s done, which was kind of the vision for it, still is and the future is to have it finished, have it be built, ” Strizheus said.
At that time he told us the home was about 80% complete.
“The heating, the plumbing, the water all that, electrical stuff is done, we just got to do the fancy stuff, so our hope is to have it done, hopefully by the end of the year,” Strizheus said.
But now the city is suing Strizheus to have the home demolished and lot cleaned up.
A hearing is scheduled for June 10th.
