COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a western Iowa officer fatally shot a driver who was pointing a handgun at officers and another at his passenger.
The Council Bluffs Police Department said in a news release Wednesday that shots had been fired from the man’s pickup truck as officers pursued it after a thwarted traffic stop around 2:15 a.m. Police say one police vehicle was struck, but no one was injured.
Police say officers surrounded the pickup when it crashed onto its side. They saw the man point one handgun at them and the other at a woman inside the cab. Police say he refused to put down his weapons and give up. That’s when one officer fired and struck the man in his head.
The woman was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
The names of those involved haven’t been released.
