There’s been a deadly industrial accident at a northeast Nebraska egg processing plant.
According to the Omaha Area Office of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Michael Foods plant in Wakefield, Nebraska notified the agency that one of their workers was involved in a deadly accident. His identity and the nature of the accident have not been released. OSHA will now inspect the plant to see if any safety violations may have caused the incident.
The plant is flying its flag at half staff Wednesday for that victim, whose name has not yet been released.
Michael Foods released a statement regarding the death.
“Yesterday, we had a tragic accident at our Wakefield facility in which we lost a valued team member. The entire team at Michael Foods is deeply saddened by this loss and we extend our condolences to the family,” said a Michael Foods spokesperson. “Safety is always our top priority, and we are currently investigating the accident but can confirm that there is no threat to other workers or public safety. Out of respect for the family and employees we will not be commenting further at this time.”
In October 2016, four employees at Michael Foods were exposed to hydrochloric acid during their shift. OSHA also proposed fines totaling $30,900 in 2014 when they found Michael Foods violated safety standards after a worker was killed.
