Woman nearly sends $8,000 to scammer, says sheriff

A woman in O’Brien County nearly sent $8,000 for a scam last week before law enforcement intervened.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office say a woman was scammed and prevented her from losing another $8,000.

They say Sheldon Police were called to Sheldon Fed Ex when an elderly woman was trying to mail $8,000 cash to a place in New York.

She had received a call saying her grandson was in a traffic accident. She received a second call from someone that said they were her grandson’s attorney, saying they needed $8,000 for the grandson’s defense.

They also learned that this incident wasn’t the first time it happened. She had already sent $8,000 to the same address in New York on April 23.

They say that the money from April 25 will be returned to the woman.

O’Brien County Sheriff Allen Schuknech warns that scammers can be very convincing to try to extort money from people and say to tell no one.

He says that if anyone were to receive a call asking them to send cash or gift cards, they should call law enforcement.
