Woman arrested for driving intoxicated onto Storm Lake

Local News

A Storm Lake woman was arrested for drunk driving after she allegedly started driving on the frozen lake overnight. Sandra Edith Chavez, 24, of Storm Lake, was charged with operating while intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor.

According to a release from the Storm Lake Police Department, Wednesday just before 2 a.m., an officer was on patrol near Awayis Beach and saw a vehicle drive on the beach before then going onto the ice.

When the vehicle was about 30 feet onto the ice, the officer reportedly yelled at Chavez who was allegedly driving the vehicle and caught her attention. Chavez then drove back onto the beach. After speaking with her, the officer alleged that she was intoxicated and took her into custody.

“It’s our belief that this officer’s observations and quick response averted yet another potential tragedy on the unpredictable ice of Storm Lake,” Public Safety Director Mark Prosser said.

Less than three weeks ago, a vehicle drove onto the lake and fell in. A father and son died and two girls were hospitalized.  A GoFundMe page was set up by a family friend to help with medical and funeral costs.

Chavez was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $1000 bond.
