From broken levees, washed away roads and bridges to homes and businesses filled with water this massive March flood is causing widespread devastation across all corners of Siouxland. Damage in the small community of Niobrara is one of the hardest hit.
The town of about 350 people surrounded by water Thursday tonight after a dam at Spencer, Nebraska gave way this morning sending water rushing down the Niobrara, filling the town flood waters.
“We’re going to need help. We’re going to need supplies and different things. I just don’t know how we’re going to get it here. We have no well system. People have no water. We’ve been running for any bottle of water we can get just so citizens can have drinking water. We have no idea when we’ll have that back up and running. Big, big economic impact across the whole area. It’s really just a terrible situation,” said Board Chairman Jody Stark.
Stark tells us the village completed emergency declaration papers with the State of Nebraska and they should be filed on Friday.
