Local News

A fire broke out at the Sioux City landfill after an explosion in a building Thursday

The Sioux City Fire Rescue crews responded to a structure fire at the landfill on the 5800 block of 28th Street.

The call came in around 12:10 p.m. on Thursday.

Assistant Fire Dan Cougill of Sioux City Fire Rescue said there was an explosion in the office building at the landfill. They believe an accumulation of methane gas was related to the cause of the explosion.

There were two people in the building at the time. They were taken to Mercy Medical for what was believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The building will be red tagged.
