Bricks from the Iowa state capitol dome in Des Moines are turning to dust.
Now that the dome is under renovation, you can purchase a piece of history.
The Iowa Planning Commission decided to sell the bricks that are still in tact and use the money to renovate and maintain monuments on the state capitol grounds.
Of the 14,000 bricks that helped hold up the dome – only about a thousand of them will be in good enough shape to sell.
Rep. John Landon, R-Ankeny, said, “It’s not often that Iowans have the opportunity to buy a historical piece of the Iowa Capitol, especially something that close to the gold dome.”
If you’d like to get your name on the list for a brick you can do so at the state capitol gift shop.
They cost $100 and come with a medallion and a certificate of authenticity.
If you’d like to order one online you can do so by visiting www.legis.iowa.gov/store but will have to add a $15 shipping charge.
