South Sioux City police officer injured in overnight shooting

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KCAU) – A South Sioux City police officer was injured in an overnight officer involved shooting.

The incident took place at 2:08 am Saturday. According to a written statement from Investigations Supervisor Lieutenant Doug Adams, a person at at Los Amigos at 1313 Dakota Ave reported seeing the man with a weapon. 

South Sioux City Police Officer, Brian Van Berkum made contact with a male outside of that business.  Shortly after that contact, shots were fired.  The South Sioux City Officer and male both sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital by the South Sioux City Fire Department. According to Dakota County Attorney, Kim Watson Berkum went through surgery for his injuries, but it now out and in stable condition. 

This is an ongoing investigation and no other details will be released at this time.
