Storm Lake could be one of the spots in Siouxland receiving some of the higher snow totals….and a snow emergency issued earlier this afternoon has people and plows getting ready.
For many, its the first significant accumulating snow of the season. 8 plows and yards full of salt and sand are ready to hit the streets in Storm Lake. The Public Works Director says while 3″ is needed for the emergency criteria, whether its a couple inches or a couple of feet, people need to prepare.
“To be honest with you, I don’t really worry what the total snow amount is because it takes just as much work to move 2″ of snow, as it does 10″ of snow. You’re still burning the field, it may take longer, the higher amounts, but you’re still running the crews out there on the routes, still burning the fuel on the plows, and you still have to come back and salt and sand the same amount… regardless of what the precipitation total was at the end” says Jason Etneyre, Public Works Director, Storm Lake.
Etneyre says residents should heed warnings and stay home unless its an emergency. Make sure cars are off the streets so plows can get through, and drive slowly if you do need to go out.
Remember, it only takes that first inch to get the roads slick, so whether your area is forecasted to get 2″ or 6″, take it easy on the roads!
