The NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship won’t be leaving Sioux City anytime soon. Already home to the NAIA Division 2 Championship, starting in 2021, Sioux City will host the first championship with Division 1 and Division 2 teams included.
The new tournament brings the top 16 teams to town. The new contract will span four years, going from 2021 ending in 2024. Sioux City beat out current Division 1 host Billings, South Dakota for the tournament rights.
“Sioux City has displayed a remarkable commitment to the NAIA in hosting the Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship since 1998, and the NAIA is excited to extend that partnership as we transition to one division in basketball in 2021,” said Kelli Briscoe, Senior Manager of Championship Events at the NAIA. “The Sioux City community, tournament staff, and volunteers have been unparalleled in providing our student-athletes, teams and fans a one-of-a-kind national championship experience and the NAIA is looking forward to building upon that tradition as we usher in a new era of NAIA basketball.”
In the meantime, Sioux City is already locked in to host the next two D-II Women’s Championships at the Tyson Events Center until the divisions merge. Tickets for the 2019 NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship are on sale now.
