In a press conference Monday afternoon, Police Chief Doug Young released new details surrounding the shooting of a Sioux City police officer during a series of arrests early Sunday morning.
Chief Young reports that officer Ryan Moritz was shot during the arrest of Isaiah Mothershed at Valley Park Apartments on Sioux City’s Northside.
The 42-year-old is a 13-year veteran of the police department and was treated and released from a local hospital after being shot in the thigh by Mothershed.
Young says the suspect was handcuffed and seated on a couch inside one of the apartments when he was able to pull a gun from in between the couch cushions and shoot at Moritz, striking him in the leg.
During a subsequent struggle, the gun went off again, also hitting Mothershed in the leg.
No officers fired shots during the incident.
