Sioux City Fire Rescue train for ice rescues

Local News

It’s the type of training they hope to never have to use. Sioux City Fire Rescue conducted Ice Rescue Training this week at Bacon Creek Park.

They simulated someone falling through the ice, and how they would safely get that person out Thursday.

There are different techniques to do that including going in to get the person and using ladders and ropes to pull them out.

“It doesn’t happen a lot, but when we do, we are prepared for it. We have the rescue sled that we use from our Station 3 that are technician level ice rescue member’s, and we want to train the rest of our department for them to get the fundamentals in case we need get called out to those situations,” said Lt. Joe Rodriguez of Sioux City fire Rescue

Lt. Rodriguez says they have a case like this at least once a year.

He reminds everyone to go with a buddy if you’re doing outdoor activities and always carry a cell phone in case you need help.
