Sen. Ernst says lawmakers need to avoid government shutdown

Local News

The days are clicking down for the government to avoid a shutdown in Washington, D.C.

Iowa Senator Joni Enrst said she wants to avoid a government shutdown over President Donald Trump’s border wall.

The deadline for funding key government agencies is December 7, about a week and a half away.

Ernst said need to come to an agreement fast.

“I do not want to see the government shut down again if we can avoid that situation. We absolutely need to do that. And I know that leader McConnell is working very hard to make sure we get funding in this lame duck session. So again, I hope that we can avoid shutting down the government. We have a lot of departments that do a lot of good for our citizens, so we need to make sure that we’re funding them properly,” Ernst said.

Trump has suggested the possibility of letting the government shut down unless Congress agrees to appropriate funding for the proposed wall along the southern border with Mexico.

On the campaign trail, Trump said the wall would be paid for by Mexico.
