Sioux City businessman and former Iowa State Senator Rick Bertrand is back on the campaign trail.
Bertrand was nominated tonight by leaders of the Woodbury County Republican Party to run again for the Senate seat he held for the last eight years.
Even before the last legislative session, Bertrand said he wouldn’t seek re-election. But after fellow republican Steven Stokes ended his campaign in the District 7 race, party loyalists approached Bertrand.
Nominated unopposed and by a near unanimous vote, Bertrand says he is confident about his future.
“I feel good about my positioning with committees and what it does for Sioux City,” Bertrand said, “Again going down with Senator Carlin, two republicans from Sioux City, give us leverage and give us momentum. So again, I think the bigger picture here is not that Rick Bertrand was nominated tonight, but that Sioux City is going to have a great run in the next couple of years.”
Bertrand will be opposed in November by Democrat Jackie Smith. She has called for a press conference tomorrow to welcome Bertrand to the race.
