Sioux City residents are speaking out against a proposed cell tower on the north side of town.
US Cellular is looking to put up a 15-foot cell tower on the 3400 block of 22nd Street near Unity Elementary School in Sioux City.
Residents who live in the area said their worried about the health problems it could cause.
“The council can’t vote based on health. They don’t care if my kids get cancer. If I get cancer, or my wife gets it. They can’t vote on that. The environmental impact. They can’t vote on that; it doesn’t make any sense. Nobody has control of it apparently except for US Cellular so I hope the council votes the right way,” said resident Brandon Weitzl.
Kevin Schuster, US Cellular’s director of client accounts, said they are here to better the connection in the community, but others believe just the opposite.
“Studies are finding if you live within that 1300 feet, there is an increased rate of cancer and other ill health effects, sleeplessness, dizziness stuff like that fatigue ext,” said resident Seth Cottrell.
Seth Cottrell is one of many residents who spoke against the towers.
“Phone companies decide where to put towers. There are a lot of things that they take into consideration; the terrain, aesthetics, community feedback. The important thing is you know we want to put our towers in spots that provide customers with the best possible wireless connection,” said Schuster.
The US Cellular tower was supposed to be put to a vote Tuesday but was postponed after the petitioner was unable to attend.
“I don’t know why they wouldn’t show up. It’s pretty shocking that you would request permission to this because it’s obviously pretty important to them that they prefer this site. Why wouldn’t you find someone to come and be at the hearing?” questioned Cottrell.
US Cellular’s full statement can be read below:
At U.S. Cellular, our top priority is to provide a great wireless experience for our customers through a high-quality network that keeps them connected to the people and information important to them. When exploring prospective locations for cell towers, we take several things into consideration, including terrain, aesthetics and community feedback. Ultimately, we want to place our towers in spots that provide our customers with the best wireless connection. After evaluating a variety of locations, we chose this site to provide the best wireless network coverage in this portion of Sioux City. As is our standard practice, we have ensured that the cell tower aligns with local regulations and health, safety and environmental guidelines set forth by the FCC.
