You know the sound that means the holiday shopping season is here, the iconic sound of the salvation army bell is more than 100 years old.
Volunteers dressed in red ringing bells next to coin collecting kettles is as present as holiday sales this time of year.
But the largest non-profit fundraising campaign in the nation isn’t taking in what it used to.
The parent organization hasn’t pegged a cause for that, but bell ringers think they know why.
“There are a lot of people walk by and say ‘you know, I don’t carry cash anymore.’ It’s a problem for us, that’s for sure,” says bell ringer, Charles Fowler.
The salvation army has tried credit card readers in the past, but people didn’t use them.
Now bell ringers are handing out cards with a website printed on them to people who are only carrying plastic and want to donate.
