Ratchet strap breaks off semi, lodges into SUV windshield

SUV driver only suffered minor injuries in the incident

DOON, Iowa - A ratchet strap became lodged into an SUV windshield  and bales fell onto a Lyon County road Wednesday morning.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, they received a call Wednesday around 10:40 a.m. of an item entering a driver's windshield. That accident occurred at a couple miles east of Doon, Iowa on County Road A52.

When officers arrived, they found an SUV, driven by Sharai Garcia, 33, of Rock Rapids, parked on the side of the road with a handle from a ratchet strap in the windshield. They also found a semi driven by Wane Den Hertog, 57, of Sheldon, that was pulling a trailer full of round bales.

Authorities say that the ratchet strap was holding bales on the semi trailer when it broke and hit the Trailblazer and also causing two bales to roll onto the road.

Garcia was taken to Sanford Rock Rapids for minor injuries. Den Hertog was cited for spilling loads on a highway.
