A Siouxland favorite has been deemed the best place to grab a hot dog in Iowa.
People magazine lists “Bob Dogs” from Bob’s Drive Inn in Le Mars as the best.
“Anytime that someone recognizes what you do, I think I work hard at what I do and I’m just proud that we got this recognition. It makes me really happy, says Bob’s Drive Inn Owner Nathan Kass.
“Well they called me about three weeks ago and wanted some pictures and stuff, so I was really excited about it. You know i didn’t know if we’d be the only one or if there’s be other ones, but to be the only hot dog in Iowa that they recognized is super exciting.”
It’s not just the magazine that loves Bob’s, but also the customers.
“We stop here, my husband, my daughter, everybody loves this place so I’m a real fan,” says Lucky Heuer of Hawarden.
Kass says while the hot dogs are tasty, it’s the atmosphere where his restaurant really shines.
“I think we’re a unique place whether it’s our just kind of the feel you get when you come here. That kind of lost America nostalgia, but we put meat on meat. We put our meat sauce on there that takes about an hour to prepare. It’s not greasy or ketchupy, you know we’re doing health food before health food was healthy.” says Kass.
“They have the best around, well it just taste better than any hot dog you’ve ever had.” says Vicki Hodgson of Ireton.
“It’s just an all-around good dog, I’ve never had a bad dog here.” says Heuer.
So what’s secret to a delicious hot dog? Kass says its just a matter of what you put into it.
“We try to use the best product in everything we do whether it’s the bun from Casey’s Bakery in Sioux Center, to a Wimmer’s natural casing hot dog, to fresh white onions and things like that. Everything I do with Heinz Ketchup I try to do the best, put the best on there,” says Kass.
“I think you’re only as good as your last meal, so I think that we go out of our way to make sure every meal we that we send out we try to make it the very best that we can.” says Kass.
“I just think if somebody’s out and about and would like a good dog, this is the place to be,” says Heuer.
