More packages means more package theft

Local News

As the holiday shopping season begins, more people are having packages delivered to their homes, which means thieves are more likely to take packages from doorsteps.

In a video posted on Facebook, a man approaches the front door of a house in Sioux City. He peers through the front door and then takes a package that had recently been delivered by UPS. Sioux City Police say if your house is left unattended for long periods of time during the day, take extra steps to make sure your package isn’t in danger of being stolen.

“We would suggest that people, if they could have packages to their place of work, that would be a good idea,” said Andrew Dutler of the Sioux City PD. “Maybe have them delivered to a member of the family who maybe is retired, or doesn’t work anymore. “

Both UPS and FedEx offer tracking services to let you know when a package arrives. If you’re worried about them leaving a package at your front door, they offer the ability to leave custom instructions to a driver to ensure a safe delivery.
