Mercy Medical Center and the Iowa Donor Network are raising awareness that April is National Donate Life Month.
The organizations gathered Friday, April 1st at the hospital to raise a flag for the fourth year in an effort to inspire Iowans to register as an organ donor.
Across the nation 122,000 Americans are currently waiting to receive a lifesaving transplant organ.
For people like Marcy Melby, whose father was a registered organ donor, giving the gift of life can bring a silver lining after the passing of a loved one.
“We fortunately have been able to meet one of his recipients, which doesn’t happen very often, so to be able to physically see her, talk to her and hug her knowing that it was because of my father was a very great experience for my family and I,” Melby said during the ceremony.
