Marcus man arrested after brief standoff

Law enforcement were called after arguing and gunshots were heard.

MARCUS, Iowa (KCAU) - A Marcus, Iowa man was arrested after a short standoff Friday night.

Richard Nelson was charged with disorderly conduct, a simple misdemeanor. 

Authroities received a 911 call Friday around 6:50 p.m. of people arguing before gunshots were heard around the 600 block of Spruce Street in Marcus, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. 

They said they and the Marcus Police Department responded to the call, as did he Iowa State Patrol, Cherokee Police Department and the Plymouth and Sioux County Sheriff's Offices.

Officers arrived and determined that the incident happened at Nelson's home. After setting a perimeter, law enforcement called Nelson who refused to leave his home. The Combined Emergency Response team was then deployed and negotiated Nelson's surrender. 

Investigators did not find any gunshot wound victims. 

Nelson was taken to the Cherokee County Jail.
