Memorial Day is a day to recognize and remember America’s heroes. This day of remembrance looks a little different for everyone but on Monday, people came together at the Iowa State Capitol for a service.

The Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs held a Memorial Day service this morning for everyone to pay their respects for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The ceremony began with the presentation of the colors, demonstrated by four members of the Marine Jr. ROTC.

Dennis Jones, USMC retired Commander, spoke about his time served in the army and what this day means to so many people around the country. He emphasized the importance of sacrifice and honor demonstrated by the fallen veterans.

Retired members of different branches of the army each placed decorated wreaths on the Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Memorial and the Iraq/Afghanistan Remembrance. This gesture represented the “Thank You for Your Service” theme of this holiday and honored all of the fallen soldiers.
