A familiar face is now a new candidate in the race for Iowa Senate District 7.
Former state senator Rick Bertrand accepted the GOP nomination for the senate seat on Tuesday. On Wednesday his November opponent, former Woodbury County supervisor Jackie Smith, said she’s ready for the competition.
Smith took aim at Bertrand during an afternoon press conference, saying Bertrand “broke a promise” to the 7th district for accepting the nomination, after he said he would no longer run.
Smith says her campaign message won’t change despite Bertrand’s entry to the race. A supporter of reestablishing collective bargaining and building a better workforce, she believes as long as her campaign continues to work hard, she has no worries come election day.
“I can’t really work any harder. We may work a little bit differently, and we certainly are going to have some spirited conversations about how we differ on issues and how we differ on work ethic,” said Smith.
Smith, a Sioux City native, served on the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors for eight years. She’s also worked as a speech pathologist for the area AEA for over three decades.
