Pork production and the jobs that are associated with it are getting attention from Iowa Senator Joni Ernst. The senator touring Sioux City’s Seaboard Triumph pork facility on Tuesday.
The facility ranks as one of the nation’s newest pork operations.
The Seabord Triumph plant began production in September of 2017 and now totals more than 2,000 employees.
Developing and maintaining a workforce are two of the issues Ernst and company officials talked about.
“The conversations we had were about continuing that effort. Workforce development, housing for those workers around trade as it affects business coming out of the facility as well as Iowa in general,” said CEO Mark Porter.
Sen. Ernst added, “What they’ve been able to make up for what we might lack in the workforce they make up with great automation. So very very incredible but workforce development is always something that we need to continue working on continuing development,” said Iowa U-S Sen. Joni Ernst.
Ernst went on to visit the Cookies Food Products plant in Wall Lake as she continues her 99 county tour of the state.
