As we get into the winter months Local 5 was curious to see how the Blank Park Zoo takes care of the animals as the temperatures start to drop.
Christina O’Donnell is in charge of helping large mammals at the zoo. She says, “There’s kind of a broad range of temperatures throughout different species.”
Catering to each and every animal’s needs can be challenging. Director of animal care, Shannon McKinney, says, “We have infloor heating. So, they have that nice warm heat coming up from below them. We, also, hve forced air heat that mimicks the wind and we have radiant heat that mimicks the sun.”
But, how do you keep a zoo animal from getting bored? By donating toys to their Enrichment Program.
