Multiple people were taken to the hospital Wednesday night, including two being life-flighted, after a head-on collision near Spencer.
The accident occurred a couple miles east of Spencer on Highway 18 Wednesday night around 7:10, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
They said that a car driven by Lucio Pena, 27, of Spencer, was going east on Highway 18 when it lost control due to the road being covered in ice.
The car then entered into the westbound lane. Zachary Petersen, 21, of Milford, was driving a pickup west and collided head-on with the car.
First responders had to use mechanical means to remove Pena from the car.
Pena and a passenger in the car were taken to the Spencer Hospital before then being life-flighted to Avera in Sioux Falls. There was also a child in the car, but was believed to be uninjured and was released.
There was a passenger in the pickup with Petersen. Both were taken to the Spencer Hospital.
Both Vehicles are considered a total loss.
Everly and Dickens first responders, as well as the Spencer Fire and Spencer Ambulance, assisted the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
