Good Samaritan Injured While Changing Tire on Hwy 275

Near Norfolk, NE (ABC9 News) A 57-year-old Pilger man was critically injured after he was hit when changing a tire on Highway 275.

According to the Stanton County Sheriff’s Office and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, a three-vehicle accident happened on U.S. Hwy 275 east of Norfolk just before 7 p.m. on Sunday.

A car traveling westbound by Nick Beckman of Norfolk hit Jeffrey Bethards, 57, of Pilger, as he was changing a tire of a van on the highway.

Beckman hit Bethards car parked behind the van, before striking the van and Bethard.

Authorities say Bethard was changing the tire as a Good Samaritan, and was thrown into the roadway, suffering a severe leg and head injury.

Bethards was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Authorities say two females were taken to Faith Regional Health Services by Norfolk Fire and Rescue for treatment of minor injuries.

Beckman was treated at the scene.
