A former South Dakota Secretary of the State employee will likely face charges for allegedly stealing the original South Dakota State Flag.

The flag, which went missing in January of 2015, was found with that former employee in Washington, D.C.

The investigation will likely result in criminal charges.

“The recovery of the South Dakota’s original State Flag preserves an important part of our history for the citizens of South Dakota. I want to extend my appreciation to the Secretary of State’s Office for their assistance and cooperation throughout this investigation. Criminal charges are anticipated to be released in the near future,” said Attorney General Marty Jackley.

The official state flag was made in 1909. It has now been returned to the state.
