Explosive device found during search of Storm Lake residence

STORM LAKE, Iowa (KCAU) – Police officers in Storm Lake found a homemade explosive device after searching a residence that was later determined to not be a threat.

In connection with an ongoing criminal investigation, Storm Lake Police Department said they executed a search warrant at a residence at 725 Hickory Lane Wednesday around 3:50 p.m. They said officers saw drug paraphernalia in plain view with three people in possession of paraphernalia. 

The three people, 34-year-old Chanthachone Satibanchong, 46-year-old Philavanh Satibanchong, and 33 -year-old Vongsay Maloutaphong, all of Storm Lake, were detained. 

While searching the residence, officers found a homemade explosive device in the basement of the residence. The Iowa State Fire Marshall’s Office determined the device did not pose a threat to area homes. They then removed the device for safe disposal.

Police learned Chanthachone Satibanchong was wanted on multiple warrants from Buena Vista County. He was wanted for failure to appear in court reference possession of a controlled substance, criminal mischief, two counts of criminal trespass and third-degree harassment. He was additionally charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $3200 bond.

Philavanh Satibanchong and Maloutaphong were both charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. They were booked into the county jail on a $300 bond each.
