Experts caution against gifting Easter pets

Local News

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – With Easter fastly approaching, some holiday gifts go beyond just giving your loved ones candy.

Some people decide to give the gift of animals during the holiday season. Rabbits, chicks, and ducklings are cute and seem like the perfect gift for the holiday, but sadly, many of these gifts end up in animal shelters in the area once owners realize the work that needs to go into caring for these pets.

“When you adopt an animal, you adopt it for a lifetime. Not just for the moment, or holiday, it’s a life long commitment that you keep to that animal and you keep them forever,” says Cindy Rarrat, owner Sioux City Animal Adoption and Rescue.

Sioux City Animal Adoption and Rescue has been in the area over 33 years, and they are all too familiar with people unable to care for a pet after the holidays.
