Dutch Tulip Festival in Orange City may not have tulips

Local News

April brings warm temperatures which many of us have been looking forward to, but that also means blooming happens earlier which isn’t good for the tulips of the annual tulip festival in Orange City, Iowa.

This year is the 76th Annual Dutch Tulip Festival in Orange City. The three day event is filled with Dutch costumes, dancing, food, and colorful floats. But perhaps the star of it all is the Dutch tulips and this year, they might not make it.
“When it starts to warm up, they start to bloom a little earlier. When it doesn’t warm up as fast, they take longer and we’ve had them blooming at Memorial Day! So that’s the biggest challenge for us is to try to have color at Tulip Festival in tulips” says Brett Mulder, Co-owner, Tulip Town Bulb Company.
Mulder has been in the tulip business for 10 years and says every year is different. The tulips can bloom early, late, or on time…it just depends on Mother Nature.
Mulder sells tulip bulbs at the festival that are imported straight from Holland. This year the Dutch celebration is May 19th, 20th, and 21st.
