As things grow, they also tend to change. In 1955, Dordt originated as Grundy college, then quickly transformed into Midwest Christian junior college and is well known today as Dordt College; but not for long.

Students and faculty gathered in Dordt College’s Campus Center to listen to their president give a once-in-an-institution’s-lifetime-announcement.

“To announce to you and the world that in may of 2019, this institution will be known and operated as Dordt University,” says President Erik Hoestra.

In the past ten years, Dordt has begun offering graduate programs, professional-technical associate degrees, and online studies. With these new programs, they felt a new name should better represent the school.

“University fits our mission. University really describes the academic excellence that is already here and also on the rise and the University name also encompasses the global footprint of Dordt college. Now and into the future,” says Hoestra.

students say this change will help advance their careers after graduating.

Student, Abby Vander Werf says, “I think that this is a really good change for Dordt. I know that they’ve been talking about it for a really long time and the fact that they’re actually doing it now is really exciting and I’m glad that I get to be apart of it while it’s happening.”

It may even allot them so extra bragging rights!

“We’ll be better than Northwestern,” says Vander Werf.
