SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The unsung heroes who work to keep our communities safe are being recognized this week.
This week is Dispatcher Appreciation Week. It was made to recognize those behind the scenes.
Dispatchers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and sometimes they do not get the recognition they deserve.
Communication Center Manager Wendi Hess knows first hand the toll this job can bring.
"I would say they have a desire to help people, you know. They sacrifice a lot with their families; they miss events with their kids at school so they can be here, and I think the job has definitely gotten more stressful over the last few years. You know we deal with a lot of tragic incidence in our community and our dispatchers deal with that first hand taking the calls. People don't call us because they're having a great day, they call us when something tragic has happened in their life," said Hess.
If you know a dispatcher, take time this week to tell them thank you.
