Dakota Dunes residents prepare for possible floods

Local News

In the Riv-r-Land Estates in Dakota Dunes along the Missouri River, people are already preparing for the worst, fearing a repeat of 2011.

People all over the area spent Friday moving their belonging from the basement to higher ground. Some even packed their belongings into trailers and moving trucks.

Many said they experienced the flooding in 2011. Some say they just finished up their basement remodels and were not anticipating having to go through all of this again so soon, especially early in the year.

Jason Dickens came up from Omaha to help secure his parents’ place who are still in Arizona for the winter.

“We are up here moving everything from the basement up to higher floors, in preparations for any kind of flood. Just like it did back in 2011. But it’s a lot colder now than**t was back then…”

The Red Cross said they’ll have shelter at West Middle School as long as needed.
