Consultants say Tyson Events Center needs millions in upgrades

Sioux City’s Tyson Events Center needs several million dollars in updates if city leaders want the entertainment venue to remain competitive in the region.

That’s the word Friday from consultants hired to evaluate the 13 year old facility.

Improvements laid out at a joint city council meeting, could carry a price tag as high as $62 million dollars.
The report includes short, medium and long term options ranging from the addition of 4 new suites, new club levels, new video and ribbon boards as well as an expanded lobby and ticket office.

Consultants say a mix of improvements provides the city some felxibility but doing nothing isn’t an option.

“Other markets that are within 2-3 hours of here that are new have all the bells and whistles, all the finishes are high end the status quo wont allow the Tyson to continue to be successful so some of these things will need to be addressed, ” said Tom Williams from Venue Solutions Group.

“The Tyson Events Center is 13 years old and nows the time we cant afford to let this fall off we need to keep it up and make it attractive and do everything we can to bring a better quality of life to the city, said councilman Pete Groetken.

Events Facilities board members are expected to present a wish list to city council in the near future.  
Some updates are already included in long term capital improvement budgets.
