UPDATE: Authorities have identified those involved in a two-vehicle collision that killed a child.

The collision took place just north of Highway 75 and Jackson Street in Merrill Monday around 8:45 p.m.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety said that 2009 Nissan Rogue driven by Mohamed Abdullahi-Mohamud, 38, from Sioux City, was going south on Highway 75 in Merrill. There were three passengers in the vehicle.

They said that the Nissan started to go off the shoulder of the road, over-corrected and then lost control. The car crossed the southbound lanes and center turn lane and collided into a northbound 2008 Dodge Dakota driven by Sarah Coleen Landsness, 33, from Le Mars. 

A passenger in the Nissan, Ayaan Ibrahn, 6, died as a result of the collision. Another passenger, Hawo G. Arab, 34, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the last passenger, Rayan Arab, 8, suffered serious injuries. Abdullahi-Mohamud suffered life-threatening injuries. Landsness also suffered serious injuries.

All five people are said to have been wearing seatbelts. Both the Nissan and the Dodge were totaled in the collision. 

Iowa State Patrol Technical Investigation Unit and the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department are continuing to investigate the crash.

PREVIOUS: A fatal accident occurred Monday night on Highway 75 near Merrill, Iowa. 

At approximately 8:45 p.m., September 17, a 2009 Nissan Rogue crossed the center line for unknown reasons and collided with another vehicle head-on.

The second vehicle being a 2008 Dodge Dakota. 

According to the Iowa State Patrol, there was at least one fatality.
