Cherokee Woman Celebrates Her 105th Birthday

Local News
A Cherokee woman marked a big birthday Tuesday, celebrating turning 105-years-old with her family and friends.

Margaret Hiller was born in Iowa back in 1910, and more than a century later? She’s still going strong. So instead of big gifts or parties, her family says they’re thrilled just to get the gift of celebrating another birthday with her.

Turning another year older may not be important for some, but for Margaret Hiller? This birthday is big.

“You know, hitting 100 is a milestone. But then, to keep going and as good as she is, it’s amazing,” said Lila Nelson, Margaret’s granddaughter.

Lila is Margaret’s granddaughter, though she says she’s got grandkids of her own by now. She and mom are speaking for Margaret, who lost most of her speech after a stroke a few years back. But the family says they’re just glad to have another year with her.

“Definitely. Even if she can’t talk, she’s still here. And that’s the best part,” said Betty Zupp, Margaret’s daughter.

And the folks over at Careage Hills Retirement home, where Margaret lives in Cherokee, say from their research? Margaret is the oldest living resident in Cherokee County. And the family says they’re proud of her, but mostly for how she’s doing, year after year.

“It’s amazing that she’s still here and can move and is as mobile as she is,” said Lila Nelson, Margaret’s granddaughter.

They say despite her being born all the way back in 1910, her family says they’re thrilled if not a little surprised that she’s still so energetic at 105-years-old.

“Who would think that, you know, my cousins, we’re all in our fifties, and close to sixty… that our grandmother is still alive,” Nelson said.

And her birthday wish may be small, but it’s coming true all the same.

“Oh, I think she’s getting it. Her ice cream,” Nelson said.

All of Margaret’s family says they’re thrilled she’s here with them to celebrate another year and they’re just hoping for many more returns of the day with her.
